Now that I'm officially home from my attempted CDT hike I felt I needed to update my journal. I know some of you have been following and may be interested in findng out what happened to monkey. I'm back in the Chicago-land area and currently enjoying my summer. I've decided to start working on the yard and house. I haven't given up my dream of hiking the CDT and will some day return to hike this trail. I never thought I'd be the one to say "Some day" but here I am saying it. I'm not ashamed … [Read more...] about CDT Journal – Final Update

Welcome to another Fuzzy Monkey's Video Sunday. These short clips are a glimpse of what it's like on my adventures. Today's video is from my attempted 2012 CDT thru-hike. Because of the back-county permit system in GNP campers are required to stay in established campsites. I spent two days at Elizabeth Lake because of this. Here is was what I found during my second day. Thanks for watching Fuzzy Monkey … [Read more...] about Fuzzy Monkey Meets Grizzly Bear in Glacier National Park
So I decided to abandon this years' CDT thru-hike. But before I completely decide to head home I rented a car and drive around the state of Montana. My goal was two-fold. I wanted to stay out here long enough to make sure this is what I wanted. I mean, did I just get off to a bad start and would my mindset change after a few days. Would the weather change? Would the hiking bug grab me and demand that I get back out there. Sadly it has not, and it's time to return home. I'lll be on the next … [Read more...] about CDT Journal: June 24th – coming home
So the plan is to rent a car and drive around Montana. Another one of my interest is United States Post Offices. I'm renting a car and driving around to get as many as I can in the next few days. My goal is to get at least 4 of the ones with murals while I'm out this way. Looking forward to having wheels as my mode of transportation instead of my feet. That's all for now. Thanks for checking in Fuzzy Monkey … [Read more...] about CDT Journal: June 21st – what’s next?
Hello from East Glacier, MT I met my first CDT hiker last night at the hostel. His reports are that that passages are still hight and may not be passable. Jeff the drama starts, yes I know I it's only snow, so I should just plough through it right? Well, we also work up to light rain and wet conditions. It a shuttle ride to Chief Mountain so I'll be making some phone calls and find out the best solution for starting this thing. A side note I also met a Romanian student on a work visa … [Read more...] about CDT Journal: June 13th – meeting the characters
I hiked about 10 or so miles today. They were hard miles, both mentally and physically. Today I just couldn't find my rhythm. I found this strange since I took the entire day off yesterday to rest up. The previous day was really hard and the weather was horrible. So I'm sorry to report I'm throwing in the towel. There are a number of reasons but the truth is my heart is not in it. I've spent the last two days debating in my head what should be the next steps. I labored all day hiking and when … [Read more...] about CDT Journal: June 20th – abandoning CDT hike, heart not in it.
Hello, thanks for joining me. This is starting of to be quite the trip. My 30+ hour train ride is done. I'll be checking into the local hostel and spending the night in East Glacier. Never mind, I forgot my planning guide at the train station in Chicago. Love my father for calling and picking it up for me. Huge thanks again. All was not lost for entertainment. Rather than reading my guide-book I listened to the volunteer National Park rangers narrate the history and facts as … [Read more...] about June 12th CDT Journal- 30+ hour Amtrak ride
My dad just dropped me off at the Glenview Amtrak station. The first part of this adventure will be getting to West Glacier. I'll be taking the Empire Builder train. It's approximately a 30 hour ride. This gives me time to study my maps and town guide. Thanks Dad for feeding and driving me to the train station. Thanks for stopping by Fuzzy Monkey … [Read more...] about Monday June 11th CDT Journal – departure
