One comment I often her from people when I mention I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail is “Wow, you must have lots of stories”. It’s true because of the distance and length of time it takes to hike this wonderful trail, any hiker is bound to have some stories of their experience.
Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the setting for one of Fuzzy Monkey’s many stories. I was hiking with Flaxseed at the time, an oriental physician from Boston when we finally made it to Newfound Gap. We of course felt out-of-place among the nice clean tourist visiting the gap and historic monument. As we roamed around we engaged in a conservation with a couple who was in complete amazement when explained that we were hiking the entire trail.
As we were talking and sharing stories of complete strangers offering rides and giving us food they immediately asked if we wanted some fruit. I believe the look on both of our faces must have tipped them off, because the next thing I knew the man was handing both of us fresh banana’s. Oh man! one of Monkey’s favorite fruits. This entire scene became more comical the more we tried to “talk” as both or mouths were full trying to consume the bananas as fast as we could. I think the couple realized we were difficult to understand having mouthfuls of banana. So we just sort of stared at each other for a few minutes as we devoured our fruit.
Our conservation eventually ended with this couple after answering so many questions and we were starting to head back to the trail. But before leaving the area we both wanted to get a picture at the North Carolina, Tennessee border sign. As we waited around a couple on motorcycles pulled up and offered to take our pictures. After mentioning what were doing they too had question, and also wanted to take our pictures with their own cameras. I’m not exactly sure what the man said, but it was something to the effect that he wanted to show his friends and family back home that he met this character hiking the Appalachian Trail. Funny! to think that I’m in someone’s vacation photo album.
So here you go fans, another Fuzzy Monkey story from my experience hiking the Appalachian Trail. Thanks for joining me.
