Photo Album – Silver Creek Conservation Area
The Silver Creek Conservation Area is one of the parks in the McHenry County Conservation District. Located in Carry, IL. The Silver Creek Conservation Area consist of 840 acres.
Silver Creek is a great extension to the Prairieview conservation area. The park boarders Behan road which is the location for the trails leading to the Prairieview Education Center. The official entrance to Silver Creek is from the Rawson Bridge road. This is just outside the boundary of Oakwood Hills, IL.
Silver Creek (Rawson Bridge Road entrance), has 1.3 miles of hiking. There is a 1 mile loop and a shorter .3 mile loop trail. The trails are mowed grass and well maintained. (See Silver Creek Photo Album). A nice boardwalk adds a nice touch to the hiking in Silver Creek. Several scenic views round out this nice park. The only drawback is no shelter.
Visitors should be aware there are actually two sections to this park. There is no trail from the Rawson Road entrance to the Behan Road entrance of the park. Visitors should be aware of this when planning their visit to Silver Creek Conservation Area.
Fuzzy Monkey’s advise on hiking the Silver Creek Conservation Area
My visit to Silver Creek was during the summer 2011 (July 15, 2011). I did not carry water with me during my hike. I had my water bottle in the car which was adequate. I recommend bringing your own water. If you forget, there is well water but this tends to have a distinguished smell and taste that turns most people off. The mosquitoes were annoying and so were the flies. I recommend some form of bug repellant or dressing appropriately. I wore shorts, a button down cotton shirt, hiking shoes, socks and sun hat.
I enjoyed the board walk and welcomed the added touch this added to the hike. The scenic views are nice as well. Visitors should also be aware that there are two sections to Silver Creek. I drove and parked at the Rawson Road entrance. I hiked the 1.3 miles during this trip. I went back on a separate trip to hike the section off Behan Road. In order to get to the Behan Road you need to park at the Prairieview Education Center and walk down Behan Road to the northern section of Silver Creek.
I visited during the week and was delighted to see a mother with her young children hiking the trail. Visitors can find a self guided map at the kiosk by the parking lot or download the map from the McHenry County Conservation District website.
