Upon completing my thru-hike in 2010, I gave 5 presentations. The following list where some of the questions presented to me. I’m sharing them here for your benefit. If you have any additional questions in regards to thru-hiking the PCT or what my experience was when I hiked. I’d be happy to answer them.
- When did you start and finish your hike?
My official start date was April 9, 2010. I officially made it to the Canadian Border the evening of September 28, 2010. This works out to 172 days, 15 hours, 16 minutes and 23 seconds.
- How did you get your trail name? Who gave you the name Fuzzy Monkey?
Well, as you saw in the beginning of my presentation. I have monkey mannerisms and or actions. When I get excited I often make the sound ooo aaa. A good friend of mine, Joe ultimately gave me this name prior to hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2007.
- How much monkey did you spend on your hike. What was it used for?
I spend $6, 979 on my hike. Yes, I do have all the receipts. The majority of the cost was for lodging, especially the farther north I got. Washington does live up to its reputation as having a lot of rain. Add to that the colder September days, so this is why I spend more time in hotels and lodges.
- What was your favorite part of the trail.
This is a difficult questions to answer as I have many favorite sections of the trail. When I hiked in 2010 there was a significant amount of snow in the High Sierras which made hiking exhausting but the views were stunning. I also have sections in Oregon and Washington that I really enjoyed.
- Did you go by yourself or did you hike with other people?
My friend Joe dropped me off at the southern terminus of the trail and hiked a short way with me. He also hiked with me a few times around the kickoff event. I officially started on my own with no plans to hike with anyone. However, I did hike with several people during different sections of the trail. This lasted for a few days to a few weeks off and on.
- How did you get the time off from work? What do you do for a living?
Prior to leaving for my PCT hike I was a contractor working in the Information Technology field. I completed my assignment and decided not to continue working the tech job. Prior to leaving this hike I was also working part-time at REI. I ended up leaving REI and was re-hired upon my return.
- How many miles a day did you hike?
My average was 22-23 miles a day
- What was your favorite town?
I don’t particularly have a favorite town. For this hike I did like getting off at Sierra City, this was when my mom and aunt came out to visit. The allure of having a car to drive and family buying you nice dinners is a real treat. Thanks Mom!!
- How many zero days did you take?
I did a poor job of keeping track of this. I’m not sure how many days I took off. I’m guessing about 10-14 days.
- What are the dangers or animal concerns to be aware of? What about bears/mountain lions?
There are Mountain Lions and Bears to be aware of. There are also rattlesnakes in the desert along with scorpions. As long as you are aware of these things and take precautions then you’ll be fine. It’s the unpredictable/irrational humans I fear the most on the trail.
- Would you do it again?
